Photography is probably one of the most classic hobbies there is. Many articles and blogpost have already been written about the subject:
- What are the best cameras?
- Which settings are to be used?
- How to use the rule of thirds?
- What are the best angles to shoot?
- Use of filters...
- ...
All of these subjects are interesting and worthwhile to get deeper into, but in my opinion are all secondary. A tip I once heard has always stayed with me and if you ask me, is the best tip ever! Curious what this tip was? Well it can be summarized into the next scentence:
Go stand in front of something beautiful, with fine lighting!
All you now have to do is point the camera in the right direction and press the shutter button. Chances are you took a gorgeous image! This regardless whether you have the most expensive camera or you are using a simple mobile phone with the settings on auto. Often times we can lose ourself in gadgets, lenses, rules or new equipment and we forget this essential tip.
This image has been taken in the afternoon from Le Brévent. It offers a magnificent view over the mountain town Chamonix and the Mont Blanc massif. Though the subject here is nice, the lighting could have been better.
Get the luck on your side...
For the images below I woke up at 3hr30 and had climbed more than 1000 meters in the dark from Chamonix. During the climbing at night, I could see no stars or moon. These were far from promising conditions. Once up there, temperatures must have been around freezing. There was a heavy mist around and I tried to stay warm. After half an hour and around the time of sunrise my patience was rewarded. Left and right some of the mist started to lift and parts of the mountains in front became visible. Shortly after, I could behold a truly magnificent sunrise. The luck is often on your side when you are in the right place at the right time!
